Smart Fire Door Device

The original patented device built specifically for fire doors.

The Smart Fire Door Device is a discreet wireless device, easily installed directly onto an existing fire door. Once installed, continuous monitoring reveals how the door is used and how its performance changes over time.

Activity, condition and performance, captured at the door.

The Smart Fire Door Device captures how the door is used, how it moves and how its performance changes over time. This creates a continuous stream of information directly from the physical door.

Original Parilon technology

Built to set the standard. Protected to stay ahead.

Parilon created the Smart Fire Door Device specifically for real-time fire door monitoring. The patented device, firmware and supporting technology form part of Parilon’s protected intellectual property — developed to lead a category that did not previously exist.

Long-life by design

Extended battery operation keeps doors monitored without frequent battery changes.

Engineered for reliability

Minimal maintenance supports dependable operation across demanding property environments. Fit and forget.

Securely connected

Protected wireless communication transmits information securely from every connected door.

Discreetly installed

Compact, purpose-built technology adds continuous monitoring without dominating the fire door.

Inside the SN-868

Five layers, one job.

Scroll to take it apart. Each layer carries the part of the specification that belongs to it.

  1. Enclosure
  2. Edge board
  3. Sensing
  4. Radio
  5. Power

Enclosure

Self-contained. Nothing wired to the door.

The shell mounts to the door or the frame and references its own orientation at commissioning. No mains supply, no cable runs, no landlord connection to negotiate.

Installation
Door / frame-mounted, no building wiring
Operating temp.
0 °C to +50 °C
Environment
Indoor use
Setup
Tap-to-start (NFC) guided flow

Edge board

Events, not raw streams.

The processor summarises each door cycle on the device and sends the summary. A watchdog recovers it from a fault without a visit, and re-calibration is guided and in place.

Edge processing
On-device per-cycle summaries
Baseline
Per-door reference captured at commissioning
Watchdog
On-device, auto-recovery on fault
Re-calibration
Guided, in-field, no removal

Sensing

How it reads the door.

A non-contact optical distance sensor for position, and multi-axis inertial sensing for motion and tilt. Together they resolve closed, open, held-open and not-latched.

Door position
Non-contact optical distance
Motion & tilt
Multi-axis inertial sensing
States
Closed / open, held-open, ajar / not-latched
Reporting
Event-driven plus periodic heartbeat

Radio

Licence-free, and a long way.

An adaptive LoRa link on the EU868 band carries the summaries to a Sensorite gateway. Spreading factor and transmit power are managed for range against battery life.

Region
EU868 (863–870 MHz)
Modulation
LoRa®, SF7–SF12 adaptive, 125 kHz
Link
Bidirectional, authenticated downlink
Security
Per-packet AES-128 authentication (MIC)

Power

A year on a single cell.

One internal Li-ion cell, deep sleep between events, wake on motion or schedule. The cell is field-replaceable and the device keeps its baseline and settings through a change.

Power source
Internal single-cell Li-ion
Battery life
Year-long at typical duty cycle
Idle
Ultra-low-power deep sleep
Replacement
Field-replaceable, keeps its calibration

The chain

One path, and what travels down it.

Every reading takes the same route, and only derived status ever leaves the building.

Sensor » gateway » cloud

Authenticated LoRa from the sensor to the gateway, then HTTPS / TLS from the gateway to the Sensorite backend.

Authenticated air interface

Per-packet AES-128 authentication (MIC). Tamper and duplicate packets are dropped; downlink commands are MIC-verified.

Derived status, not raw streams

Byte-packed summaries — door state, link quality, timestamp. No raw sensor feed is transmitted or stored.

TLS and a per-gateway key

The gateway forwards over HTTPS with its own API key; secrets at rest on the gateway are encrypted on disk.

Operator-authorised updates

Firmware moves on a controlled release channel, authorised by the operator — never silently.

Licence-free, sub-GHz

EU868 (863–870 MHz): no spectrum licence, no SIM, and the sensor link does not lean on the building’s own network.

Not adapted for fire doors. Invented for them.

Parilon designed and developed the Smart Fire Door Device specifically to monitor fire doors continuously. Its hardware and firmware form part of Parilon’s protected intellectual property, with patented technology safeguarding the innovation behind the device.

Common questions

The ones we get asked about the hardware

Year-long on a single internal cell at a typical duty cycle. It deep-sleeps between events and wakes on motion or a schedule. The cell is field-replaceable, and the device keeps its calibration and settings through a change.
No. It is door- or frame-mounted with no building wiring, and self-references its orientation at commissioning. Nothing is run to the door leaf or the building fabric, so the doorset’s certified performance is unaffected.
Door position by non-contact optical distance, plus multi-axis motion and tilt. From that it reports closed / open, held-open, and ajar / not-latched — event-driven, with a periodic heartbeat so a silent device is itself a signal.
Yes. It uses the EU868 band (863–870 MHz) with an adaptive LoRa link back to a Sensorite gateway — no spectrum licence and no SIM. Spreading factor and transmit power adapt to trade range against battery life.
Compact, structured status messages only — device ID, door state, link quality and a timestamp. No raw sensor streams, and the air interface is AES-128 authenticated per packet.
